Kairos Prison Ministries
Kairos is a ministry of the church ... a ministry of the apostles whom Jesus, the Christ, has called into community and sent forth into the environment of the correctional institution. Kairos has been called the best example of the early church in existence today.
What Kairos is
Kairos Prison Ministry is a ministry addressing the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women and children, to their families and to those who work in the prison environment. Kairos sprang from the Cursillo movement and is supported by volunteers from Cursillo and those other movements that consider Cursillo as their root. Although a separate ministry, Kairos has received the blessing and encouragement of 4th Day movements such as Cursillo, National Episcopal Cursillo, Presbyterian Cursillo, Lutheran Via de Cristo, The Upper Room's Walk To Emmaus, and independently ecumenical Tres Dias. Kairos Prison Ministry is a ministry rather than a movement.
Who makes up Kairos
Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. is the parent organization of a body of ministries operating as Chapters that are located in many States and Countries. Kairos of Texas operates as a State Chapter and serves in prisons and Jails through a contractual agreement with the Warden and Chaplain of each unit. The Big Country Emmaus Community is involved in Kairos Prison Ministry weekends in TDCJ institutions. There is considerable need to minister to our brothers and sisters in white, and we welcome all who wish to become involved in this ministry.
Who can serve on Kairos teams?
Kairos teams are made up of members that have been involved in a 4th day movement such as Walk to Emmaus, Cursillo, Tres Dias, and others. Both men and women make up the teams for a Kairos weekend. Inside team members are of the same sex as the residents of the institution, and both men and women work on the outside team. In other words men will work on the inside team at a men's facility, and women will work on the inside team at a women's facility. Applications to be on a team must be completed and approved prior to the Kairos weekend.

What does Kairos do about food for the weekend?
When the residents of TDCJ units hear about Kairos, they are not thinking about Jesus in most cases. They are thinking about the food that others that experienced a Kairos weekend have talked about. Find out more about the food for a Kairos weekend.
How can I provide agape for Kairos?
How do you like baking? There is always a huge need for cookies. Each person that wants to provide agape is asked to bake 50 dozen homemade cookies.
Can I attend a closing?
You may make an application to attend a closing. The application must be made for each weekend. See the Kairos Weekend details page for the application.
